The Ultimate Pass It On
The one constant that has been with me throughout my entire life has been sports. It has always been there for me. If I wanted to get some exercise, sports was there. If I needed some intense competition, I turned to sports. I met my very best friends through sports, and still compete today with many of these same people.
Through sports I have learned so much - like discipline, teamwork, handling issues under pressure, not to mention the sheer joy of participation.
As I was growing up, I never really thought too much about how lucky I was to have the opportunity to participate in the many activities that I enjoyed. I had people around me like my Mom and Dad that allowed me, actually encouraged me to play. I never really considered any other option.
We never think about having the "right to play". The concept is completely foreign to us.
We are Fortunate
There are many countries around the world where playing any kind of sport is not possible. Things as simple as kicking a soccer ball, or throwing a baseball are not an option for these kids. Take a minute and really try to get your head around that concept. Think about your favourite sport, and how much you enjoy doing it, and try to imagine never having the opportunity to do it ever again. I know, it's difficult, yet it is a reality for millions of children worldwide.
Right To Play
Taken directly from the Right To Play website:
Right To Play is committed to every child’s right to play. We give children a chance to become constructive participants in society, regardless of gender, disability, ethnicity, social background or religion. Through games and sports, we help create social change in communities affected by war, poverty and disease.
